It was a grey day.

It was always a grey day.

The dark grey mills belched out their dark grey smoke into the dark grey sky as thousands of children scampered along cobbled streets to be greeted by the dark grey foremen of the dark grey mills.

But something felt different this morning.

There was the faint burble of music and a strange red tint to the dark grey clouds.

Joseph stopped on his way to the dark grey clog factory where he spent most of his dark grey days. He could see shafts of red light spilling through the archways in the dark grey viaduct. And from the other side of the dark grey terraces he could hear music. It wasn't beautiful, but he so rarely heard music that it seemed to him to be so very beautiful.

Other children stopped.

A thousand children stopped.

A thousand children breathing light grey mist into the dark grey air.

And then it appeared between the dark grey arches.

A burbling, trundling, tumbling circus of scarlet and ivory shrouded in a creeping, crawling, inquisitive mist.

As it edged towards him along the dark grey cobbles, Joseph realised that he had never seen anything like it. He had never seen anything so colourful. He had never seen anything so red. So very very red.

In all of his dark grey life, Joseph had never seen anything so Spectacular!

I went for a fairly muted palette where Little Red Riding Hood would stand out in her red cape. I took a few liberties with the shadows, perspective and lighting.

Some peeps may remember this character from the 'Master and Servant' challenge. This is an illustration for a story i created around the 'Master and Servant' theme, about a servant boy who finds a wooden flute in the forest and discovers that it can help him with his errands.
In this scene he's collecting firewood and is getting a little help from the woodland animals...
I didn't finish the challenge because my daughter was born three weeks before the deadline, and everything went to pot. But i did promise myself i'd finish this picture. I'm in the process of working up the book with a view to publication, so i may be able to post more stuff later... but i thought i'd give a taster...
I'll post some close ups in the next day or two... i need to get some onto my webspace and i can't do it from the office!

This isn't my usual style, but it's fun to do something a bit different from time to time. I've been working on this in my lunch hour for a week or so, for a 'friendly contest' on... ahem... another art forum. The topic was 'Rome 3000', 'Imagine if the Roman Empire had thrived and survived to the present day'.
I started a couple of images, and this was the second. The first was a few gladiators and an armoured 30's Bugatti waiting in a tunnel to go in the arena. But i went with this idea because it seemed more 'fun'. And i had a smile on my face putting in the detail. Not sure who he's phoning... maybe his mum?
